Sida and DFID Financing through Rural Energy Agency
The Government of United Republic of Tanzania and Sweden through Swedish
International Development Agency (Sida) in Collaboration with the UK Government,
through its Department for International Development – DFID, signed a Specific
Agreement in which the Swedish and UK Governments will finance the development
of rural energy modern services through the Rural Energy Fund (REF) which is
managed by the Rural Energy Board (REB).
The main objective of the financing programme is to increase access to modern
energy services in rural areas of mainland Tanzania for sustainable social
economic development and poverty alleviation.
The Swedish Government through Sida will provide 600 Million Swedish Kroner
(equivalent to Tshs 145 Billion), while the UK Government through DFID will
provide 30 Million UK Pounds (equivalent to Tshs 96 Billion), for the REF over
the period of five years. With this financing arrangement, both Sida and DFID
will provide support through REF.
This Arrangement sets forth common provisions and procedures for the
delegated cooperation between Sida and DFID regarding the support to the
Programme. The objective of the Arrangement is to improve donor coordination and
harmonisation through delegated cooperation, thereby reducing the administrative
burden of The United Republic of Tanzania and enhancing the efficiency of the
Donors’ development cooperation.
It is important to note that Sida and DFID have been supporting Tanzania for
many years in the various sectors of the social economic development and poverty
alleviation to Tanzanian.
